Commemorating the “National Batik Day” which falls every October 2nd, students of jurusan Ilmu Komunikasi UGM were caught simultaneously wearing batiks earlier today. This occurence was semi-coordinated by Korps Mahasiswa Komunikasi (KOMAKO) UGM, a primary student body belonging to the Department of Communication. In a tweet posted on October 1st, the account administrator encouraged students to wear batik themed outfits the next day when attending classes.
“Yes, the idea of wearing batik first came from KOMAKO’s tweet,” Bunga Addinta, a sophomore student said. “However, me and my friends intended to wear batik at the first place,” she added. The students were excited with the idea of simultaneously wearing the same-themed clothing. KOMAKO amplified the excitement by organizing an Outfit of The Day (#OOTD) competition. Students who wore batik to campus today got the chance to participate by uploading their pictures to the Twitter account of @komako_ugm. The best two mix-and-matchers will be awarded with a special prize from the KOMAKO internal department. The enthusiasm was caught on camera as students uploaded their pictures in batiks one by one.
The occurrence of Communication students in UGM wearing batiks at the same time are quite rare to see. “The good thing about FISIPOL is that we are at liberty to wear anything that feels good on us. There are no specific dresscodes here– unlike other faculties, we are free to attend classes in tees. Other faculties forbid their students in wearing non-collared shirts; some even won’t allow allow students to wear jeans!” Valentina D. Nita, another sophomore student admitted, “but in a way, seeing my friends dress a bit formal does induce a pleasant feeling!”
The winners of the #OOTD contest will be announced approximately tonight, and we do agree that whoever wins, wins the Communication runway in batiks will be theirs! How do you celebrate the “National Batik Day?”
